Air Abrasion Filling

Air Abrasion Filling Detail 01

Modern dentistry has made achieving a healthy and bright smile easier. With the many dental options available today, one can effectively take care of his/her teeth without undue hassle.

At Caringbah Dental Care, we never stop improving our services. A safer way of ridding you of tooth decay is now available with air abrasion filling at Caringbah Dental Care! Read on to learn more about this amazing dental treatment.

What is air abrasion filling?

Air abrasion is the removal of decay on the tooth enamel without drilling. It is a non-invasive treatment that makes use of a hand piece that works like a mini sandblaster “spraying” away the decayed parts.

The hand piece blows a blast of air containing tiny aluminium oxide particles out of its tips onto the tooth to remove the decay. The removed decayed parts are then suctioned away by a thin tube.

When is an air abrasion normally used?

An air abrasion filling is best for the following situations:

  • Prepare teeth before dental filling
  • Prepare teeth for bonding and sealants
  • Remove stains and spots
  • Repair old fillings and sealants
  • Repair broken crowns and bridges
  • Repair cracks and discoloured teeth

Benefits of air abrasion

The following are the advantages of choosing an air abrasion filling

  • Produces no heat, pressure, or vibration during the procedure
  • Preserves healthy tooth tissue
  • Reduces the need for anaesthesia, particularly for shallow cavities
  • Reduces the risks of tooth fracturing and chipping
  • Simple and non- invasive (could take longer than traditional drilling)

Is the process safe?

Air abrasion is safe. In fact the only precautions needed before the procedure are protective eyewear (to prevent possible eye irritation from the spray) and a rubber dam to protect the areas of the mouth not being treated. The removed parts are suctioned out of the mouth to avoid being breathed in.

Who are ideal candidates?

Anyone can get an air abrasion filling. It is a good option for those who are afraid of needles or those uncomfortable with the noise from regular drilling.

However, not all dental treatments can be substituted with an air abrasion filling. Crowns, inlays, and onlays are examples of dental treatments, which require regular drilling.

Is the procedure painless?

The air abrasion filling procedure is not entirely painless. Sensitivity may be felt because of the air and the abrasives used. But this is only temporary and is nothing to worry about.
